How to Build a Restaurant Website You Actually Control
Your website still shows the old menu because only your agency knows how to change it. Every price update means a request, a wait and sometimes an invoice, while guests keep reading the wrong menu. Keep the domain and logins in your name, pick a tool your team can update and plan for upkeep. Zeat can provide a mobile menu to link from your site if that setup is confirmed for your restaurant. It doesn't build the website for you.

Why it matters
For your restaurant
Your site, your keys
You keep control of your domain, hosting and content, even if you switch providers.
For your team
Update it yourself, no waiting
A designated person knows how to change your hours or a photo and check the result on a phone.
If nothing changes
A website that goes stale
A wrong menu or wrong hours stay online because nobody has access, and every fix depends on someone else.
Put the domain, accounts and content in the restaurant's name
Register your domain name in an account the business controls, with a recovery email the owner can access. Write down who pays for renewal, where the site is hosted and who can recover access if the person running the website leaves. A domain bought on a provider's personal account can be hard to get back right when you need it.
Before you sign, ask who owns the site's text, photos and files, how to get a copy and what happens if you switch providers. Keep login details in a place only managers can access, not in a message sent to the whole team. This groundwork protects your key information long after launch day.
Choose a tool your team can actually update
Compare a website builder you run yourself, a custom-built site and a managed maintenance service. Ask to see three everyday tasks in the tool you're offered: changing your hours, swapping a photo and fixing a link. Someone on your team should be able to do all three before the project counts as finished.
Compare the build cost, ongoing fees, support, backups and whether you can export your content in a reusable format. A highly customized site can be useful, but not if every small fix takes several days. Zeat covers the mobile menu and the service flow; choosing your website platform is a separate decision.
Give visitors a short path to what they need
Decide on your pages before you pick a template: an introduction to the restaurant, the menu, directions and a contact option that works. A small restaurant can fit all of this on one clear page. A hotel with a restaurant and a bar may need to separate its hours and menus. Either way, visitors should reach the information without scrolling through a long photo gallery.
For the menu, decide who updates prices and availability at the source. Zeat can display a mobile menu guests open with a QR code. If you want to link to it from your website, have the link confirmed and tested for your setup. Don't leave an old PDF or photo of the menu on your site alongside a newer mobile menu.
If you offer online ordering for pickup, map out the whole journey before you add an "Order now" button: the guest picks dishes that are actually available, chooses a pickup time the kitchen can meet, gets a confirmation from your team, then knows where and how to collect the order. Assign one person to watch for new orders and one to hand the right bag to the right guest. Also test a sold-out dish and a guest who shows up late. Without clear answers, your website creates a line at the counter instead of speeding up pickup.
A QR menu or a link to your menu is not enough to confirm an order placed remotely. This guide covers Zeat's mobile menu and ordering at the table. Don't assume it handles online ordering, pickup time slots, prepayment or pickup tracking. If you use another tool for pickup orders, make sure its availability, prices and confirmations stay consistent with the menu guests see.
Pre-launch checklist for your restaurant website
Copy this list and add a "checked by" column and a date. Ask someone who didn't build the site to test it: on their phone, can they find the restaurant, read the menu and reach the right person? Every button should lead to an action your team actually follows up on. A reservation button nobody answers makes a promise your website can't keep.
Run the check again on an ordinary connection and after every major change. For a form, send a test request and confirm it arrives. For a link to the Zeat menu, open it from your site, then compare one price and one unavailable item with your approved menu. This checklist gives you simple proof that everything works before you announce the site to guests.
- Domain, hosting, logins and renewal controlled by the restaurant.
- Address, hours, phone number and directions correct on mobile.
- Current menu easy to read; prices and items match what you serve.
- Call, message and reservation buttons and forms tested, if you have them.
- If you offer pickup: dishes, time slot, confirmation, pickup point and the person in charge tested end to end.
- Person responsible for updates and date of the next check written down.
Plan upkeep and handover from day one
Set a simple rule: the manager announces the change, the person in charge of the website publishes it, and someone else checks the page on a phone. Note the renewal dates for your domain and hosting. Keep a recent backup of your content and ask your provider how to restore the site if an edit breaks a page or a form.
When your hours or prices change, also update your business listings and any other channels you control. But the website needs its own upkeep: logins, updates, backups and working links. If your site stays accurate without depending on a single person, guests can trust it, and you stay free to switch tools later.

Frequently asked questions
Who should own my restaurant's domain name?
The restaurant should keep control of the account, the renewal and the recovery options. Ask for logins you can verify, even if an agency builds the site.
How do I pick a website builder for my restaurant?
Have someone on your team change your hours, a photo and a link. Also compare maintenance, backups, support and whether you can export your content.
Can Zeat build my restaurant website?
No. Zeat isn't a website builder. Its mobile menu is something you can link to. Have the linking option for your setup confirmed and tested.
